Next to the Frond Carvings was a tank full of water, about 3 by 5 feet and a couple of feet deep.
It's not at all like playing with bathtub ducks. Nope! No Siree! Not at all. Really. I wondered if I would laugh out loud when the mental image of the judges actually sitting in the tank with the ducks passed
There were three judges sitting on one side, and 40 spectators in folding chairs on the other side. Above the tank was a large mirror set up at 45 degrees so that you could look down into the tank.
On the water, bobbing gently with the waves, were four decoys. Occasionally, a judge would reach out and nudge one or the other, or tip it a bit and let go. The decoy's reaction to the forces and its authentic appearance in the water is important to this category. Presently, a judge turns one decoy completely upside down and lets go of it.
She nods approvingly when it promptly rights itself and tips its beak back at her. The audience is intent. This is serious stuff.
through my mind. (Deadly serious, they were naked, surrounded by bubbles, and the ducks had an odd yellow hue.
Everyone in the audience was holding their breath to see if the just-dunked-duck would break out of the bubbles...) I managed to hold it down to just a giggle.
