Reckless Kelly

"Wicked Twisted Road"
Reckless Kelly is about to release their second CD from Sugar Hill Records. I really like the sound of this five piece group, some real good Texas country and Texas rock. A real good production that is not overstated, sounds like the vibe of a live recording. Ray Kennedy does a great job of producing these guys in Nashville. Mastered by Yes Mastering in Nashville who does a great job of keeping things sounding natural, not going over the edge with distortion, a real warm analog sounding recording. Really like the vocal style of Willie Braun, their lead singer who has a rough, but warm sounding voice, a big part of what makes the group good. Plus they play their own instruments for the most part and avoid hired guns, a very talented band.
Brothers Cody and Willie honed their chops playing in their Dad's cowboy band "Muzzie
Braun and the Boys". Chris Schelske is the band's very talented bassist while
drummer Jay Nazz, started out playing with his dad's '50s-style trio. Jay to me
is rather average, but fits in and does his job as drummer. Guitarist David
Abeyta attended Berklee school of Music, working on his jazz and rock talents,
David is an excellent and very eclectic musician.
There are thirteen tracks that start out as acoustic country rock for about the
first seven tracks and pick up to a more southern rock sound towards the middle
of the disc and come full circle back to an acoustic instrumental at the end.
The album starts out with "Wicked Twisted Road" which is a great acoustic
country song with a great melody, great lyrics and some great hooks (they end
the CD with an acoustic instrumental of this which is great: something neat to
do is program them together on your CD player, really comes out nice.)
"Dogtown" is another great country rock song on the acoustic side which really
grows on you. "Motel Cowboy Show" is a country rocker that really takes off well
and is just overall a great roadhouse type song.
"Lot To Ask" is a slower ballad which I really like, a real personable song.
"Seven Nights In Eire" has a lot of Irish influence to it.
In closing, this is a fine CD in the vein of Radney Foster, Corey Morrow and
other fine Texas bands. A very enjoyable listen. Street date 2/8/05.
