Radney Foster

"And Then There's Me"

Radney Foster has been around the music world for quite some time, starting out as part of a duo "Foster and Lloyd" in the late eighties. Then he did three solo albums with Arista before moving on to Dualtone.
Radney produces other artists, is a consummate songwriter, covered by many artists. Quite the performer, his fans have been after him for years to make an album of just him and his guitar.
That is what this CD is, just him and his guitar with some friends in his basement studio. Personally, this sparse recording is one of his best efforts, very emotive and soul baring. Quite the producer, the sound is intensely warm, never heard acoustic guitars sound so sweet, his vocals are so intense and full of personal nuances.
Reminds me so much of the last time I saw him here in Philly at a small coffee house called "The Point", where he did an acoustic segment including the great "Easier Said Than Done", included here. He ended the show with "Godspeed", done much like it is here, a song made popular by the Dixie Chicks.
The title track here "And Then There's Me" has a couple of other instruments. This song is a mid-tempo ballad which is a bit comical, but serious, looking for a gal who he says to " there's a world full of fools and then there's me".
There are eleven total tracks. This is just a great listen, sounding very much alive. Some of my favorites include "Never Gonna Fly" done with the electric slide of his buddy Mike McAdam. Lyrically it is great. "Never Gonna Fly, if you're afraid to fall". This is a very inspiring song, showing Radney's genius. "Figure It Out" is a two stepper with some great guitar and lyrics.
Radney shows some great guitar prowess here. The vibe of this disc reminds me of Shelby Lynne's "Identity Crisis" which is very sparse.
"Half Of My Mistakes" is real down to earth, full of truth. Love the minor chord sound of this song. Really a cerebral song, as a lot of this great disc is.

This is a very must have CD if you are a fan of Radney's and it is only available at his website:
