Reunion 2005 Photos

The delightful city of Nashville, the city of country music, was the site of the 2005 reunion for the crewmembers of the USS Pursuit.  Our Chairman, George Rose, guided us through 3 days of musical events, musical history and good old southern atmosphere.  We arrived at various times on Thursday at the Millennium Maxwell House (this was a hotel, not a coffee shop) where our accommodations were excellent.  Although we shared the hotel with a large group of US Army medical reservists, there was plenty of room for all.  One of the outstanding features of the hotel was there continuous shuttle service, not only to the airport but anywhere in town at almost any time.  Even the people with cars used the shuttle (no place to park in town).

On Friday morning, we had our first adventure with our voyage on a river paddleboat that served us a great lunch and then entertained us with a lively country music stage show.  After the show, we enjoyed the sights of the Cumberland River shoreline including a great view of Nashville, while listening to a Dixieland Band playing out on deck.  I am happy to report that none of our crew got seasick (which sometimes happens on these river cruises).

After the cruise, we hurried to Maxwell House to get ready for the second major event of the day, a show at the “Grand Ole Opry”.  Although the place was huge, George got us good seats.  We wound up being the live audience for the taping of six, half hour radio shows.  I must say the commercials were interesting even though I never heard of most of the stuff and I surely can’t buy it in California.  There was a continuous flow of real country music that was great.

On Saturday morning, we went on our “City Tour” with one of the most knowledgeable tour guides I have ever seen.  Although she was born in Canada and came to Nashville a few years ago, she knew something about every nook and cranny in town.  We started with a large park that had a copy of the Roman Pantheon temple, then on to millionaires’ row where all the music stars live in large mansions.  Our guide seemed to know them all.  After that we drove back to town to navigate the street that houses all the recording studios. Our guide highlighted the most important ones with some interesting stories.  We then drove past the Nightclubs (all with live entertainment) on to the Tennessee Monument where we took a lot of pictures.

Saturday night we had our Banquet and it was a very elegant dinner.  We did our business meeting and selected San Diego for 2006 and Omaha for 2007 (see the meeting minutes).  George Rose was given a standing ovation for the fine work he did setting us up in Nashville.  As always, our hospitality room was in continual use.  One of this years feature’s was a slide show on the television of previous reunion pictures and many pictures Joe Venovich took while on duty on the Pursuit in the late 50’s.

 September 22-24, 2005 Reunion
Nashville, TN

The annual reunion of the USS Pursuit crewmembers and spouses was held in Nashville, TN on September 22 to 25, 2005.  Meeting called to order by Secretary, John Schulz.  The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Rusty Wainwright after which Rusty sang the Star Spangled Banner.  Chairman George Rose welcomed the group and summarized the events of the reunion.  Secretary Schulz thanked George for the outstanding reunion he organized.  The group gave George a standing ovation to show their appreciation.

In memory of our deceased shipmates, Secretary Schulz read the names of each deceased shipmate after which Chairman Rose offered a prayer in their memory.

Secretary Schulz opened the business meeting with a review of the minutes of the last meeting which were approved as written.

Joe Venovich provided a written financial report indicating that the Association is solvent. There was no historian report as Historian Bob Ciereck and wife Ginny were in Florida moving into their new home. There was no Publicity report.

Secretary Schulz then read a number of letters he had received since the previous reunion from the members. Letters were read from Betty Ellison, Larry Fountain, Bob Feely, Dick Pearce and Ken Crank.

Based on a proposal made by Tom Knapp and accepted by the members at the 2002 reunion to plan the locations of the reunions two years ahead, it was required to select locations for 2006 and 2007.  Nominations were then opened for the location of the 2006 reunion.  After much discussion and many suggestions there was a voting process that indicated that San Diego was the location of choice for 2006.  John Schulz volunteered to organize the reunion in San Diego.  There was a second place tie for 2007, one of which was the city of Omaha, Nebraska.  Joe Venovich volunteered to organize the meeting in Omaha.

The floor was then opened for nominations and voting for the 2006 Officers.

John Schulz nominated for Chairman
John Schulz nominated for Secretary
Joe Venovich nominated for Treasurer
Arlie Wooters nominated for Publicity Chairman
Bob Ciereck nominated for Historian

All were voted into office by the members.

Joe Venovich announced he would collect dues after the meeting.  Door prizes were then drawn.  All attendees were eligible and most everyone won something because there were a many terrific door prizes.  A second round of applause was given to George and Martha for an OUTSTANDING 2005 reunion!

Motion to adjourn. Motion Carried.

Respectfully,
John Schulz – Secretary
