SAMPLE HANDLING FOR DNA RESEARCH AT THE U of COLUMBIA-MO
(bring with you when you take your dog in for sampling)
Blood sample- Dr. Johnson needs 10cc (or more) of whole blood, in purple topped (EDTA) tubes. Enclosed are 2 tubes per dog and the appropriate styrofoam mailing tubes. If errors occur, you may substitute 3 3cc tubes instead. Please package them the mailers so that they do not move and are broken. Do Not use heparin, spin, extract serum, or freeze the sample. Please refrigerate the sample if it is to held anytime before mailing. Please tape and place the styrofoam mailing container, only, in the zip lock bag.
Label sample with the following:
Welsh Springer DNA research
registered name - call name
(if samples from several dogs are sent together, number samples and forms)
A filled out Individual dog sample form and a marked Pedigree copy must be included with the samples to tie it in with the correct family.
Shipping - The sample must be shipped overnight mail. The US Post Office provides the cheapest method but UPS and FedEx are fine. Do not send on Friday. There is no one to accept delivery on a Saturday. Since it will be shipped overnight, no cool packs are needed. Please refrigerate samples if there are any delays prior to shipping. Place the styrofoam containers in the cardboard or sack provided depending on the number of samples sent.
Remember samples must be sent next day.

Please enclose the following with each sample:
3 - 4 generation pedigree marked with: Litter ID number, Registered name, AKC number, Call name, affected or not affected, and highlight where the dog fits on the pedigree.
Properly marked tube in styrofoam mailer in ziplock bag.
